There's an ugly side of Cuba, which tourists are spared from seeing, but which they support with their dollars. It is the Cuba of political executions, the ruthless suppression of a free press, the heavy-handed indoctrination of children, the subversion and perversion of psychiatry for crushing free thought and free expression, the Cuban poets and librarians languishing in horrific dungeons for decades, and gunboats that patrol the shorelines kill or threaten to kill Cubans who try to flee.
If you want to know more about Cuba than you can learn from its beautiful beaches and government propaganda, I recommend this poet's memoir, of his life in Cuba:
